FENTY X PUMA Fall/Winter 2017

Rihanna continues to wow with her collections in partnership with athletic brand PUMA. The latest show in Paris from the musician is a defiant take on collegiate prep. Rihanna was alive in every look that stepped out on the runway, there was that good girl and boy gone bad vibe. The collection went through classically preppy themes, from boarding school tartan to sports jerseys. A bold color palette like yellow, green and orange were paired with traditional school colors like navy and dark burgundy. Velour and satin was mixed in with nylon puffers and jerseys. There were also hockey inspired pieces, varsity-style monograms, rugby stripes and a spin on the classic tracksuit. The athletic inspiration was apparent even in the more goth-y looks, like oversize black sleeve hooded pullover with matching pants, giving the subculture a streetwise spirit.Rihanna has always been aware of emerging trends and culture, choosing the weird and fantastical she sees and reinterpreting them into her own wardrobe. But no matter the trend there is always that juxtaposition of femininity against the masculine, which has become the musician’s signature aesthetic, and she has been able to effortlessly transfer it to the FENTY X PUMA offering. The puffer-sleeping-bag-coats throughout the show were all stand outs and mimicked not only a lively current trend but also Rihanna’s personal airport style. There was a certain sex appeal to the tom-boy styled looks, with mock-neck crop tops, and retro inspired snap-button track pants with boxer briefs peeking out with branding on the waist bands. The hits of the collaboration from the start have been the footwear offering, selling out in hours. Her popular platform sneakers were tweaked with an even chunkier work boot sole and are covered with an array of finishes, like preppy plaids.  The wellies were the stand out footwear of the collection, unlike the typical rain boots, these went up well into the upper thighs with plaid on the inside lining for a contrasting effect. Looks like Rihanna continues to dazzle the fashion set.
