Reed Space has been a fixture on the Lower East Side since 2001. It became a streetwear fixture by combining footwear, fashion, street style, art and more in one space while operating on an underground wave. The shop offered the latest in streetwear, growing publications and artwork. Reed Space was a meeting place for these mediums and admirers, with ever changing, rotation of apparel, footwear, and reading material that were about emerging ideas not yet mainstream. The shop’s stand out moment was the release of one of the more popular sneakers on the scene, the Pigeon Dunks, which eleven years ago came out of the space. But even before then reed Space had already earned a reputation as a true driving force in the world of streetwear. The closing is confirmed by a for rent sign posted on a glass panel of the shop, along with a note that read “[Founder jeffstaple] wanted to revamp our whole image of what we want to do for the culture and the people, so we’re probably going to look into a new direction starting next year,”. The closing comes almost fifteen years after its grand opening. Us over at rime have always respected Reed Space’s vision, it saddens us to see our friends and such an iconic space close, but we look forward to the future direction and new space.
