Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” was a success and played practically everywhere by practically everyone, the song was co-produced by an obscure duo at the time called Majid Jordan. The name is a combination of the duo’s first names. Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman met at the University of Toronto, and went from recording in dorm rooms, to releasing EPs under another name, Good People, to eventually releasing a full length album. They’re signed to the label Drake co-founded, Ove Sound. Their three year rise was a fast one. With early success with writing and co-producing Drake’s “Hold on. We’re Going Home” under their belt, they have given everything they’ve produced for their self titled album the same love and detailed attention they would’ve for their boss, Drake himself. For the album the duo experiment with a darker and deeper sound. They have a knack for mixing pop effects with moody vibes. Pulsating base and uptempo drums opens up the album with “Learn from Each Other.” There’s a track produced by The Weeknd, “Something About You”, which also samples distorted vocals from the duo’s producer Majid Al Maskati. With simple honest lyrics like “half of me is ready, half of me needs time” the album is an over flow of contemplative thoughts of sadness, loss and love that will have you bopping your head along to every song. Although the ’80s synth inspiration and ’90s R&B vibes are evident throughout the album, it sounds modern and fresh. Majid’s timid, almost lonely-beaten-down vocals adds a rawness to the songs, that leaves you wanting more after the last song. The sound from Toronto seems to be one of rhythm and melancholy, shown by other Toronto’s booming stars on the music scene, but Majid Jordan seem to have mastered it.
